I am honored to have the extremely talented artist Annelie Jagenholz interpret my music. This is a video that I created of her fantastic drawings set to my song,
"Don't Know Why I'm Losing My Mind"
"Ode to Dorothy" is devoted to a young woman who I treated 10 years ago. She evacuated to Missouri during Hurricane Katrina. While there she was able to receive free individual and group counseling as well as medications. She made tremendous progress in managing her illness. Her circumstances changed and she had to return to New Orleans. Unfortunately, free services for the medication and the specific kind of group therapy that she needed were not available. Her Iife became unbearable. She joined a cult where she was led to believe that peace was available through a portal of fire. In her confused and distressed state of mind she took this literally and self-immolated. She left behind devastated parents, sisters and friends who will forever have to wonder why the needed treatments aren't available to those who simply cannot afford to pay. I continue to grieve with them and am haunted by the fact that she wasn't able to get the treatment she needed.
Beginning in 1991, I suffered a prolonged severe mood disorder which
necessitated resigning from my position as a partner in a successful law firm and going on SSDI. Several non-profits, especially the Extra Mile, helped me rebuild my life. Fortunately, I also had health insurance that allowed me to receive the treatment and medications I needed for the long road to recovery. After 11 years of struggling with this disorder, I was able to earn two degrees in counseling and begin a career as a professional counselor. I realize that my story is the exception and believe everyone with mental illness should have the opportunity for the greatest recovery possible.
This project will also help support The Extra Mile, The Musicians Clinic and The Center For Musical Development And Wellness.
I have had the privilege of working with several mental health non-profits including being on their boards. I know how important their work is and how difficult it is for them to get support from the community, let alone raise funds. Much more funding is needed to provide help to people like Dorothy.
Thank you for your kind consideration!
