The second piece is "Remembrances Of Hurricanes Past" which conveys the experience of going through a hurricane from first notice to the aftermath. After Katrina, non- profits and churches helped to fill the gaps left by the government’s inadequate response. I did volunteer work as a Victim’s Relief Chaplin and counselor in the lower ninth ward shortly after we were allowed to return to New Orleans. Through funding by the Red Cross I also was able to counsel dozens of survivors for several years afterward. This has given me a keen awareness of the need for mental health assistance immediately afterwards and for many people, years after a major hurricane.
